What Keyword Research Really Means

Keyword research is not “find the biggest number.”

It means:

  • find what your target users actually search
  • understand why they search (intent)
  • decide which page type should answer that query

The 4 Intent Types You Must Recognize

Informational

User wants to learn. Example: what is technical SEO

Best page type: TOFU guide.

Commercial Investigation

User is comparing options. Example: semrush vs ahrefs

Best page type: comparison page.

Transactional

User is close to buying. Example: ahrefs pricing, semrush free trial

Best page type: BOFU review/decision page.

User wants a specific website/page. Example: google search console login

Best page type: usually not your target unless you are that brand.

Beginner Keyword Selection Rule

For each keyword, score three things:

  1. Relevance to your offer (0-5)
  2. Buyer intent strength (0-5)
  3. Ranking feasibility for your current site (0-5)

Total score out of 15.

Use this threshold:

  • 12-15: publish now
  • 9-11: keep in backlog
  • below 9: skip for now

Quick Workflow (60 Minutes)

Minute 0-15: Build Seed List

Start with 10-20 seed phrases from your product/topic.

Example seed set:

  • best seo tools
  • seo tools for small business
  • semrush vs ahrefs
  • technical seo audit tools

Minute 15-30: Expand by SERP and Suggestions

Use:

  • Google autocomplete
  • “People also ask”
  • related searches

Collect only terms that are truly related to your audience.

Minute 30-45: Tag Intent and Page Type

For each keyword, add:

  • intent label
  • suggested page type (TOFU/MOFU/BOFU)

Minute 45-60: Pick This Week’s Publish Set

For beginners, pick:

  • 1 TOFU keyword
  • 1 MOFU keyword
  • 1 BOFU keyword

This creates a mini funnel, not isolated pages.
